Prăjitură cu Dulceață și Bezea (Jam-and-Meringue Layer Cake)

INGREDIENTS

250 grams margarine or butter

1 packet vanilla sugar

250 grams granulated sugar

½ packet baking powder

400 grams flour

Chopped nuts

6 eggs

Jam

150 grams powdered sugar

PREPARATION

  1. Mix the margarine with 250 grams granulated sugar until it becomes foam. Add two whole eggs and 4 egg yolks. Add the flour, vanilla sugar, and baking powder.

  2. Spread the dough in a pan greased with margarine and dusted with flour (or use parchment paper).

  3. Spread the jam over the dough. (Traditionally, a slightly sour jam is used; for example, berry jam or apricot jam.)

  4. Beat the four egg whites to a froth with the 150 grams of powdered sugar. (Add the sugar to the egg whites incrementally.) The resulting meringue is spread over the jam carefully, and is then topped off with finely-chopped nuts.

  5. Bake at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for 40 minutes.
